Put very simply, theology is the study of God.
One way of studying God is by doing what is called “Systematic Theology”.
“Evangelical Systematic Theology is the comprehensive study and coherent organization of what can be known, primarily from Scripture (i.e., theology’s only final and ultimately authoritative source) and secondarily from any and all other relevant sources, about God and His relations to the created universe, in a manner that is understandable and applicable to contemporary audiences, to the end that God’s people are strengthened and satisfied in Him, to the praise and glory of His name.” – Dr. Bruce Ware, SBTS.
Here are four “S” words to highlight.
1) The SUBJECT of theology is God. Is there any more exciting subject to study?
2) The SOURCE of theology is first and foremost scripture. We can only know God because He has revealed Himself to us through His Word, the Bible.
3) The SETTING of theology is people, like you and me. We are the audience because we desperately need to know God more.
4) The goal of theology is SATISFACTION! The whole point of studying theology is to KNOW God and be completely satisfied in Him. As St. Augustine (who lived about 1700 years ago!) said, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in You.”
So why study God (theology)? Because you were made for God. To know Him, love Him, and worship Him. You were made by Him, and without knowing Him you cannot fully know yourself. So get to know God, so like Paul you can confess,
“Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Phil 3:8).
What is theology? It’s definitely not the boring stuff.
