Our biggest problem is not external, but internal. Our sins aren’t to blamed on bad raising, lack of education, or inherited behavioral traits. Our sin and rebellion is to be blamed on our hearts (says Jesus).
For our sinful desires grow inside before they appear outside. It’s our hearts that cause us to think evil and be evil. This is why Jesus is condemning the Pharisees for “washing” their hands when they should be “washing” their hearts.
Therefore, the path to doing better or being better is not external religion or trying harder to be good, but through turning to the only one who is good, and receiving a new heart from Him.
Then with a new heart from Jesus, you continue to repent of root sins that begin in your heart, even before they climb out through your skin and become visible to others.
