Faking it is pretty easy, at least for a while.
You can smile at church and tell your small group how great your time in the word has been. You can look your spouse in the eyes and promise fidelity. And you can assure your boss that you are giving 110% to your latest project.
Faking it is easy because no one can look through your skin, and see your heart. Well, no one except God
For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.””
1 Samuel 16:7 ESV
In the Bible, Saul was a man who could fake it well, and everyone thought, “Now there’s a great king”. Of course the problem with faking it, is that the truth will always eventually come out.
That’s why God doesn’t look at the outside (the part that easiest to fake), but instead God looks at the heart. That’s why in David, when everyone else saw a common little shepherd boy, God saw a lionhearted warrior-King.
Through the ups and downs of life, Saul’s heart eventually came out and his faking was exposed. If you read David’s life, you find ups and downs too, but at his core remained a heart that loved God.
The truth is you can fake a smile for almost everyone, but you can’t fake a pure heart before God. Because He sees you, fully and completely. So how is your heart? What are you trying to hide or fake?
Instead of faking it with God, why not get real with Him and let Him go to work on your heart, so He can mold it to become more like His? Only then will that smile on the outside, match the true you on the inside.
